Congratulations to Lei on his collaborative manuscript "Direct Observation of Nucleation and Growth Behaviors of Lithium by In Situ Electron Microscopy" published by ACS Energy Letters. The work provides a direct visualization of Li growth on our biomass-derived carbon nanofibers, a topic that our lab has studied for years. These materials provide excellent electrochemical performance in Li and Na batteries.

This work uses statistically significant experimental methods to study metal dissolution and redeposition in an operating battery. We also develop an effective method to regulate metal interfacial dynamics for improving battery performance.

The work is in collaboration with Prof. Andrej Singer's group. We, for the first time, reveal the relationship between defects, mechanical strain, and dopant distribution in LLZO solid electrolytes, which will help the development of all solid state batteries.

Our work "Quantification of Heterogeneous Degradation in Li-ion Batteries" has received a wide range of media coverage started at VT, Purdue, SLAC, and ESRF, and it has now reached most corners of the scientific public media.

Chunguang's manuscript "Fully Oxidized Ni-Fe Layered Double Hydroxide with 100% Exposed Active Sites for Catalyzing Oxygen Evolution Reaction" is accepted by ACS Catalysis. The work provides soft and hard X-ray spectroscopic measurements of a new electrocatalyst with 100% atom efficiency.

A few of us attended the 235th ECS Meeting in Dallas. Momi gave two oral presentations entitled "Multi-Site Redox Activities in Chemically Complex Sodium Layered Oxide Cathode Materials" and "Three-Dimensional Compositional and Charge Heterogeneities in Sodium Layered Oxide Cathode Materials". Xiaona presented a poster entitled "High-Performance Ionic Liquid Gel Polymer Electrolytes for Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries". Feng gave an invited talk on "Synchrotron X-Ray Spectroscopy and Imaging for Studying Intercalation Battery Chemistries".

Feng participated in two collaborative studies that were accepted by Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences ("Direct high-resolution mapping of electrocatalytic activity of semi-two-dimensional catalysts with single-edge sensitivity" led by Prof. Huolin Xin, UC Irvine) and Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids ("Heterogeneous damage in Li-ion batteries: Experimental analysis and theoretical modeling" led by Prof. Kejie Zhao, Purdue University)

We co-led a study that quantifies the heterogeneous degradation of battery electrodes with SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, and Purdue University. The work received instrumental support from the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The study is now accepted for publication in Advanced Energy Materials, entitled “Quantification of Heterogeneous Degradation in Li-ion Batteries”. Congratulations to The Lin Lab members Linqin, Crystal, Stephanie, Zhengrui, and David.
